A very popular Club at TCPS is the STRIVE Club. STRIVE stands for Students Taking Responsibility and Initiative in Volunteering Everywhere. The organization is based on the concept of “Kids Helping Kids”. In addition to their full academic workload, the members also volunteer their time to support local and global organizations and coordinate a variety of fundraising events for selected charities.
In October, students organized and promoted a High School food drive collecting 355 food items for the Markham and Richmond Hill Food Banks. STRIVE members also created a Gratitude Tree for Thanksgiving. Each student was given a leaf to write what they were grateful for and STRIVE members assembled the tree outside the lounge.
During the month of December, their project was to bring awareness to the cultural holidays of Diwali, Hanukkah, Kwanza and Christmas. STRIVE members made announcements, designed posters, created videos and organized activities that remote and in-class students could complete while promoting an inclusive learning environment.
The club’s current global goal is to raise $500 for UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). STRIVE is working with the Canadian branch which supports Afghani refugees with food, shelter, clothing and education requirements as they start their new lives in Canada. Fundraising efforts include an ongoing online fundraising page, as well as a raffle and a candy cane sale held prior to the holidays. The club is making excellent progress and they are well on their way to achieving their goal.
Congratulations to the STRIVE members on their fundraising efforts and for working together to help those in need both locally and globally.
