Building Safe Habits Early with the Learn Not to Burn Program

The Learn Not to BurnProgram is a valued component of our Junior Elementary curriculum, delivered in partnership with Captain Sutherland and his team from the Markham Fire Department. Designed for students in Grades 1 and 2, this specialized program features engaging, age-appropriate sessions throughout the school year. During these visits, firefighters share essential fire safety knowledge and encourage thoughtful questions from our young learners.

Through these interactive sessions, students develop a strong understanding of important safety practices, including the importance of regularly checking smoke detectors and creating a family fire escape plan. The program empowers students with practical knowledge while fostering confidence in responding safely to potential emergencies.

A highlight of the program took place on June 3rd, when the fire department visited the school for an immersive, hands-on experience. Students had the opportunity to explore a real fire truck, learn about firefighting equipment and its uses, and even try operating a fire hose with guidance from the firefighters. This memorable experience brought their learning to life in an exciting and meaningful way.
