On Wednesday, May 20, 2026, TCPS students in Grades 9 through 12 participated in an engaging, in-person STEM workshop delivered by McMaster University. This enriching experience highlighted the strength of our partnership and our shared commitment to providing meaningful, real-world learning opportunities.

Food Desert Workshop (Grades 9–10)

Students in Grades 9 and 10 explored the concept of food deserts—areas where access to affordable, nutritious food is limited—through both historical context and modern-day engineering challenges. The workshop also introduced students to the expanding field of software engineering and its role in addressing complex societal issues.

Through a hands-on coding activity, students analyzed a simulated neighbourhood with limited access to grocery stores and determined the optimal location for a new store based on community need. In doing so, they developed foundational programming skills while applying critical thinking to a real-world social challenge.

Echo Specs Workshop & University Information Session (Grades 11–12)

Grade 11 and 12 students delved into concepts of electricity, coding, and circuit design to develop a smart device capable of detecting nearby objects for individuals with visual impairments. This project introduced students to biomedical engineering applications and emphasized connections to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Good Health and Well-Being and Reduced Inequalities.

The session also included a university information presentation and a Q&A, providing senior students with valuable insight into post-secondary pathways and opportunities.

These workshops not only strengthened students’ technical and programming skills but also fostered critical thinking, problem-solving, and a deeper understanding of how technology can be leveraged to address social inequities.

At TCPS, experiences like these empower students to connect academic learning with real-world impact—preparing them to become thoughtful leaders and innovative problem-solvers in an ever-evolving world.
