Elementary National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Monday, September 30 was the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Town Centre students wore orange shirts to promote the important concept of “Every Child Matters”. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day to learn about the history and unique culture Indigenous peoples in Canada, raise awareness of the impacts of residential schools and reflect on the loss of culture and freedom experienced by Indigenous children. Literacy empowers and liberates people. Town Centre students in older grades collaborated to create an age appropriate read aloud for our younger students. Creating a read aloud allows the older students to be positive role models while the younger students are provided an engaging way to understand the significance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Pre-School National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Each year, September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation across Canada. Both this day and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30th. Orange Shirt Day is a commemorative event dedicated to raising awareness of the individual, family, and community-level intergenerational impacts caused by residential schools on Canada’s Indigenous population. The concept of “Every Child Matters” highlights the importance of acknowledging these experiences. The day symbolizes the loss of culture, freedom, and self-esteem suffered by Indigenous children over generations, while fostering a collective commitment to truth and reconciliation across communities in Canada.
