Pre-School and Grade 1 June Bulletin TCPS creates a monthly Pre-School and Grade 1 information bulletin for our parents and students. Enjoy our June edition. IB MYP Community Project – Battery Recycling Program Grades 6, 7 and 8 Service Learning is an integral part of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) at TCPS and is a mandatory requirement for students to complete. It starts in the classroom and extends beyond it, requiring students to take an active part within the communities in which they live. This is achieved through a process of discovery of self and community and reflections inside as well as outside the classroom. Students may volunteer within the school, locally, nationally or internationally. For their project, two of our grade 8 students started a battery recycling initiative. Over the course of 2.5 weeks, they collected 234 batteries from their fellow grade 8 students and their families. That’s 39 lbs of collected batteries, of which 13 lbs would have leaked toxic materials into the environment because they were badly corroded. Saluting Our Students Feature – Published Author Riya. S. A currently grade 2 student at Town Centre Private Schools, Riya, wrote the book “Heart of the Sea” when she was only 6 years old. The main character Olivia was guarding the Heart of the Sea when a boy took it away without asking. He could be in big trouble! Will Olivia find the Heart of the Sea or will it be gone FOREVER and destroy the sea? This heartwarming story was published in November 2021 and has been added to our school library. At our recent Scholastic Book Fair Riya, had the opportunity to share her book and read it to our grade 1 classes. The students enjoyed the story and had some great questions for the author about her experience in creating this book. The students names were entered into a draw and two lucky grade one students received a gift bag from Riya. Congratulations, Riya on this incredible accomplishment! We are very proud of you.
