Black History Month at TCPS During Black History Month, Town Centre celebrated the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians and their communities who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada a culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous country. Throughout the month of February, the Elementary students viewed a three-part “Spotlight Series” featuring TCPS students. Each video highlighted a different population within the Black community including Activists and Politicians, Heroes of Sport and Musical Icons. At the High School level, bulletin board, hallway and stairwell displays were created showcasing and celebrating Black Canadians. Daily announcements throughout the month included Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement on this year’s Government of Canada’s Black History Month theme of “February and Forever: Celebrating Black History Today and Every Day” as well as a series of videos. Among these, the High School students shared virtual videos including Black History Month Celebration (a YouTube presentation by Canadian Heritage), in addition to videos focusing on artists and athletes. The daily announcements also highlighted the role of Black Canadians in forging Canada’s heritage and identity. Elementary Winter Olympics and Carnival The Elementary students at TCPS celebrated the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics which commenced on February 4th and concluding with the closing ceremonies taking place on February 20th. Throughout the month we celebrated Team Canada with different activities and contests. The school created a special Canada Medals display board in the front foyer proudly show the tally of the bronze, silver and gold medals earned for Canada. Canada proudly brought home a total of 26 medals! Our first theme day on February 11th was Team Canada Day. Elementary students and staff were encouraged to wear a Team Canada jersey, or any clothing item that was red or white to show support for our Canadian athletes. On February 16th the Elementary classes went for gold in a head-to-head contest to see which class could create the best Olympic themed bulletin board. Students and staff worked together and came up with some very creative displays. Congratulations to grade 3-126 for winning for the best display and earning a special movie day for their class. We wrapped up our Olympic theme with our annual Winter Carnival on February 18th. The grade 6 classes assisted staff with running the games and earned volunteer hours towards their Service Learning Hours. Held in the Main Gymnasium, and the Amarillo Gymnasium for the grade 1 classes, students could choose from a variety of table carnival games including bean bag toss, Nerf target shooting, bounce-a-ball challenge, igloo slam and mini basketball. Those looking for more active games joined the Team Canada Hockey target shooting or tried out the bobsleigh obstacle course. Before leaving, each student had the chance to write some well wishes to our Canadian athletes and pose for a picture under the Olympics rings! What a great way to end the week! Montessori Education Week Between February 22nd to February 25th our Pre-School students participated in our annual Montessori Education Week. The Montessori method of Education which has remained for 115 years is a clear testimony of this great method of education that has spread worldwide. Annually at a global level, Montessori Education Week is celebrated to honour Dr. Maria Montessori, her life and work! During this week, the students were engaged in various Montessori worksheets and crafts and were proud to take their work home to show their parents! Our bulletin board at the front of the school also showcased the subject areas in a Montessori classroom: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics and Culture. This method of education encourages independence, curiosity and builds resilience helping students overcome challenging situations that they encounter in the ever-changing world around them.
