Fun-Filled Elementary Spirit Week Following our annual Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 20th, the Elementary classes kicked off Spirit Week from September 23rd to 27th with a bang! This special event is a yearly highlight, packed with activities designed to boost school spirit. Students ditched their uniforms and embraced a series of exciting, themed days. Pajama Day Monday: The week started with everyone in their comfiest pajamas, robes, and slippers. It was the perfect cozy start to Spirit Week! Grade 6 to 8 Student Activity Council (SAC) candidates also delivered compelling speeches, hoping to win their classmates’ votes. Teacher Day Tuesday: Students mimicked their favorite teachers’ styles, coming to school dressed as their beloved TCPS educators. The creativity was off the charts with some fantastic outfits! W Day Wednesday: Inspired by the questions “WHO do I look up to?”, “WHERE would I like to work?”, and “WHAT do I want to be WHEN I grow up?”, students dressed to reflect their dream careers or role models. For grades 6, 7, and 8, it was also election day for the Student Activity Council. TC Tiger Day Thursday: Celebrating our school mascot, TC, students and staff donned special T-shirts representing our four Houses: Yellow Gryphons, Blue Thunderbirds, Green Dragons, and Yellow Phoenixes. The school spirit was palpable! Fabulously Funky Friday: The grand finale saw everyone sporting crazy, colorful, and fun hairdos and outfits. The week wrapped up with a special assembly featuring a fun slideshow of the week’s activities. Students who donated to Toonies for Terry the previous week, were entered into a draw. Two students won the opportunity to spin the wheel and earn a teacher prank. Thank you to our good sports, Ms. Exarhakos who was hit with a pie and Mr. Cabanilla who danced dressed in a taco costume. It was for a great cause. Spirit Week 2024 was a blast, filled with laughter, creativity, and unforgettable memories!Grade 9 Outdoor Education Leadership Experience With great excitement, TCPS grade 9 students embarked on our annual Leadership Experience this year! On September 18th, our grade 9 class journeyed to the renowned Camp Wanakita Leadership Centre in the picturesque Haliburton Highlands for a thrilling three-day outdoor adventure. Camp Wanakita, a year-round outdoor education facility with over 60 years of history, is celebrated for its exceptional outdoor leadership training for both youth and adults. This three-day trip, an integral part of Town Centre Private High School’s Physical Education program, offered students the chance to bond and engage in exhilarating outdoor activities. From conquering the high ropes course and scaling the climbing wall to mastering fire-building techniques, participating in survival games, and exploring scenic hikes, students were encouraged to step out of their comfort zones and enjoy quality time with their peers. This cherished tradition at Town Centre has been a highlight for many years, fostering a sense of community and adventure. It has consistently provided students and teachers with the opportunity to learn, have fun, and connect in a dynamic and less structured environment.Terry Fox and Town Centre: His Legacy Continues In 1980, a young man named Terry Fox set out on an extraordinary journey with a singular mission: to run across Canada and raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Despite having one leg amputated due to cancer, Terry’s spirit was unbreakable. He ran an average of 42 km a day, the distance of a marathon, showcasing immense courage and determination. Tragically, after covering an astounding 5,373 km from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Thunder Bay, Ontario, Terry’s cancer spread to his lungs, forcing him to end his run. He passed away in the summer of 1981, just shy of his 23rd birthday. However, his “Marathon of Hope” left an indelible mark on the hearts of people not only in Canada but around the world. Terry’s legacy teaches us about strength, perseverance, and the power of generosity. For the 19th consecutive year, the students and staff at Town Centre Private Schools (TCPS) have embraced Terry’s dream of finding a cure for cancer by holding their annual Terry Fox Run. On the morning of Friday, September 20th, students from Pre-School to High School participated in this meaningful event, walking, jogging, or running in support of cancer research. At the Amarillo Campus, students ran in the playfield and gymnasium, while at the Main Campus, younger elementary students ran in the parking lot and grades 7 to 12 students ran at nearby Highgate Park. The event was a true community effort, with students, parents, and relatives contributing generously. This year, TCPS aims to raise $10,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Terry Fox’s memory and legacy continue to thrive through the enthusiastic participation of students and the generous financial contributions from the community. This event not only fosters school spirit but also reinforces the importance of giving back and supporting a worthy cause. Since 2006, TCPS has raised an impressive total of $247,934.83 for the Terry Fox Foundation. The total for this year’s run is still being calculated.
