These students have chosen and been accepted to competitive programs of various disciplines including Rotman Commerce at the University of Toronto, and Schulich Commerce at York University. Scholarships have been granted to 73% of the TCPS graduating classes. We wish the graduating class of 2023 all the best for the future. Elementary Academic Awards The Academic Awards for 2023-2024 were presented on Tuesday, June 20th. With proud family members in attendance, grade 7 students received certificates for reaching Town Centre’s Honour Roll (achieved an average of 80%) and the Principal’s Honour (achieved an average of 90%), which recognizes consistently high academic achievement. The grade 7 students were also recognized for demonstrating initiative, enthusiasm, and genuine interest and ability and achieving the highest grade in the subject areas of Computer studies, Music, French, Physical Education, Art, History, Geography, Science, Mathematics and English. In addition, the winners of the grade 6 and grade 8 STEM Fair winners, grade 5 and grade 8 Ted Talks winners received plaques for their achievements. A variety of trophies and medals were also awarded to those who participated in Canada-wide Mathematica Centrum and Gauss Math competitions. We are so proud of the high level of academic achievement demonstrated by our students and we look forward to their accomplishments in the coming school year! Learn Not to Burn Program This specialized program for younger Elementary students is run with Captain Sutherland and his team from the Markham Fire Department. Offered to students in grades 1 to 4, the fire fighters do information sessions throughout the school year and address questions from students regarding fire safety. The program reinforces the need to check our smoke detectors to ensure they are working properly and how to create a fire escape plan with their families. A highlight at the end of the year in a visit from the fire department where students had the opportunity to explore a fire truck and are shown the fire fighting equipment, how it’s used and even taking a turn experiencing what it’s like to turn on the fire hose with a little help from a fire fighter. It was a wonderful addition to the school program and thoroughly enjoyed by our students.
